DESCRIPTION JATROPHA RED
The swollen stems (caudices) at the base of certain species have earned them the names of bottle plants and pine nuts, but they are also called medicinal for their therapeutic uses to which the genus owes its name (Jatropha derives from the Greek jatrós, doctor and trophy, food).
As with most Euphorbiaceae, the berries and sap are toxic1 (including chickens1, fish1, ruminants1 and even goats2 in this case, regardless of the dose tested).
The most famous jatrophas for their uses are:
Jatropha curcas (also called jatropha, pine nut or medicinarian) It is a shrub traditionally used as a living hedge to protect crops or animal homes (its seeds with medicinal properties are toxic to humans and animals), native to Central America. It is now widespread throughout the world.
Medicinal interest: Various Jatropha have a traditional medicinal use and could find others: For example, Jatropha curcas has disinfectant3, antifungal4 and antiparasitic virtues, likely to be used against Malaria3. Jatropha cilliata contains flavonoids which are an anxiolytic attenuating conflicts between laboratory mice5
Jatropha oil extracted from its fruit can be used for cooking food, making soap or candles.
More recently, this oil was proposed as a source of biofuel, but before the needs of the species were well known6 and with controversial results7.
Jatropha gossypiifolia whose oil is purgative and the root used against leprosy;
Jatropha integerrima, epicar, with decorative red flowering;
Jatropha multifida, the coral tree whose leaves are eaten in Mexico;
Jatropha podagrica, a popular ornamental plant;
Jatropha phyllacantha, a plant from Brazil also called a favela, which gave its name to the inner-city areas of most of the country's cities.
