Abrus precatorius, also known as red pea or paternoster Bean, is a climbing shrub in the family Fabaceae. The seed is highly toxic


PRESENNTATION

It has alternate leaves composed of small pale purple to pink flowers in clusters.
Compound leaves have from 8 to 17 pairs of membranous, oblong or oblong-obovate follioles. The inflorescences are 2-7 cm long, the Corolla is pink to purple.
The fruits are pods that often mingle, twist into clusters and contain 3-7 very hard, Scarlet seeds with a black spot near the hilum

TOXICITY

The seed is highly toxic. It contains abrin (a set of 5 glycoproteins close to ricin) which is the most dangerous known plant toxic. Crunching a single seed can be deadly for a child.
