DEFINITION

Catharanthus roseus is a perennial herbaceous plant native to and endemic to Madagascar belonging to the Apocynaceae family. It is extended cultivated and naturalized in the tropics and subtropics1. It is in particular known to contain vincristine and vinblastine, molecules used in the chemotherapeutic treatment of numerous cancers.

PRESENTATION

It is an evergreen shrub or herbaceous plant, with an unpleasant odor, which can measure up to 1 m in height. The leaves are entire, oval to oblong, 2.5-9 cm long and 1-3.5 cm wide, shiny green, glabrous, with a pale midrib and a short petiole 1 to 2 cm long; they are arranged in opposite pairs. The flowers are white to dark pink with a dark red center, with a base tube 2.5–3 cm long and a very narrow tube corolla 20–30 mm, 2–5 cm in diameter, with five spreading lobes, petal-shaped. TOXICITY

All parts of the plant are poisonous, which can cause intestinal and neurological disorders as well as breathing difficulties if ingested. This toxicity is due to the many alkaloids it contains, particularly vincristine and vinblastine with anti-cancer properties.
